Smart Aquaculture Site Survey Guide
Surveying before deployment saves far more than fixing as you install. SAFEBACK breaks the smart-aquaculture site survey into four steps: map the ponds, check power and 4G, plan install points, and list a delivery and acceptance checklist.
Step 1: map the ponds
Quantify the basics first: pond count, area per pond, average depth, species and stocking density, and feeding rate. These decide how many monitoring sets are needed and how aerators are grouped. High-density, flow-through and static ponds need different approaches; for multiple ponds draw a site plan to lay out the main cabinet and cabling. SAFEBACK advises recording each pond's 'area x depth x density' as a table that becomes the design starting point.
Step 2: survey power and 4G
Power decides where the control cabinet sits and how cable runs; 4G coverage decides whether data reaches the cloud and alerts reach the phone. Remote ponds are often weak on signal, so measure each carrier's 4G strength at the pond edge and add an external antenna or pick a stronger spot where needed. On the power side confirm stable mains, the distribution box location and spare load, reserving storage or a dual feed if necessary. SAFEBACK's 4G controller caches on outage, but it still needs enough signal to send data back.
Step 3: plan install points
Place sensors where DO is most representative: mid-to-lower depth, away from dead water and strong sun. Plan aerators by pond shape and grouped switching, with the cabinet close to power, weatherproofed and lightning-protected; run power and comms in separate trays to avoid interference. Multiple ponds can be managed by one twelve-channel board (such as the TK-R12) for grouped control and leaner wiring. SAFEBACK stresses finalising points during survey, not after installation.
Step 4: list delivery and acceptance
The survey produces two checklists: a delivery list (equipment, cabling, install labour, expected go-live) and an acceptance list (4G uptime, DO accuracy, aeration-linkage test, dashboard and alerts). Agree acceptance criteria before signing to minimise later disputes. SAFEBACK's method is to prove the closed loop on one pond - confirming linkage and alerts - before rolling out across the whole site.
FAQ
- What should I prepare before installation?
- A pond site map, confirmed power points, and a measured 4G signal at the pond edge; settle these three and the plan will not need rework.
- Does a single small pond need a survey?
- A single pond only needs a light check (map, signal, power); only multi-pond or whole-site projects require a full survey and unified plan.
